A couple of things...

I've noticed that only 7 people from the group are following my Blog. You could really do with making sure that you are linked to it, because it's my primary means of disseminating info.

Secondly, it would be useful if you could link to the blog or blogs of the other people in your group. Click on "Design" at the top of your blog page, then add "Links" as a gadget. Open a new window and browse to blog of your group member. Copy the address in the bar at the top to create the link.

Remember - all research should be complete by the beginning of the day on Tuesday since you will then be planning in groups.

Student Syndrome and Parkinson's Law

Look familiar?

Student Syndrome
Parkinson's Law

Content of Analysis

As well as the Media Language stuff, you need to make sure you mention the following in your Opening Sequence analysis posts:

  • Representation - what sort of people/ groups/ places are in the sequence and how do they come across?
  • Audience - who is the film aimed at and how do you know? This often links to the above
  • Institution - who made the film and who distributed it? You can find information about this kind of thing on Wikipedia or IMDB
Another useful site is Box Office Mojo, which gives figures for how well films did financially.

Final Groups

Could you please post a reply to this detailing who is working with whom. Just one person from each group. Thanks.

Snow Joke

I would strongly suggest that everyone be starting their research. If you have used your time wisely over the last few days, you could very easily have completed all your research and be ready to start planning. If the bad weather continues, you should really be focused on completing this task.

Prisoner Project

Over half term I will upload The Prisoner videos to Vimeo and link them to this blog. I will also try to include a brief note on each about the levels they would get if the AS mark criteria were applied to them in the manner we used during the lesson.

Thursday's PowerPoint

There was a bit of an information overload on Thursday, so I have uploaded images from the PowerPoint presentation I gave to act as an aide-memoir. Remember - your goal for the half term is to be planned up and ready to shoot by the time you get back. Any queries/ questions, e-mail chris.earl@fram.durham.sch.uk or leave a comment below. Don't forget that exemplar documentation is available on the VLE. You can find them here.

Production Documentation

I have created a link to the folder on the VLE which contains production documentation. This includes shot lists, edit lists, storyboards etc. You should start to use this material when you are planning your subsequent shoots.

You can find them here.

Induction Task

By the end of next week (Friday 1st October), you should all have completed the following tasks:
  • Set up a blog on Blogspot and posted your response to the Movie Treatment task
  • Shot, edited, rendered and uploaded a video demonstrating a number of different shot-types (as a member of a group)
    • As part of your blog entry, you should mention any difficulties you had and how you overcame them
  • Shot, edited, rendered and uploaded a video demonstrating a number of different types of camera movement (again, as a member of a group)
    • Again, as part of your blog entry, you should mention any difficulties you had and how you overcame them
Any individual who has not completed all three tasks by the end of next week will be deemed to have not met the needs of the induction project and will have their name passed to Mr Ward and Mrs Gibson; this may lead to a contract being issued.

If you have any problems with any aspect of any of these tasks, please speak to me or e-mail me (chris.earl@fram.durham.sch.uk).

The video above was produced using Xtranormal, a script-to-video rendering site. It's free to use at a basic level and allows you to create simple animatics with basic camera angles. It took me about 10 minutes to programme the video above.

Booking Cameras

Please remember the protocols for booking cameras and tripods:
  • This should only be done via Mrs Gibson, not anyone else in Media or English
  • Kit should be booked at least 24 hours before required
  • Kit should be collected from and returned to Mrs Gibson ONLY, at a time of her convenience
If you are asked to book a camera for a lesson and fail to do so, you will be marked as "E" and sent away. This will start from next week. Tasks which require cameras will be introduced with at least 48 hours notice, and will be featured on this blog.
